| "Loss Of The Homeland"
12 miles from the german city, Aachen, lies a small village of 700 inhabitants.
It's a normal village like there are a dozen of them in the area, but this would change in 1994. Rheinbraun, one of the largest mining companies in Europe, decided to excavate 35 million tons of brown coal which lies deep under the ground of Etzweiler and neighbouring villages.
Since the end of the Second World War,31000 inhabitants from more than 80 villages were resettled because of the open mining.Etzweiler was next.
The first inhabitants left Etzweiler in November 1995. However, it was not until 1997 when the largest removals took place. That same year the Rheinbraun company has started with the demolition of the already abandoned houses. 7 years later,November 2004,little remain of Etzweiler. Most of the houses are gone and the only things that remain are the desolated streets and streetlights...
...Etzweiler is dead
